Recently, some U.S. politicians and think tanks have again openly floated the so-called ‘abandon Taiwan’ stance—suggesting that the U.S. should avoid direct military involvement in a potential China-Taiwan conflict—triggering significant anxiety in Taiwan. Although this view does not represent official U.S. policy, its repeated appearance in mainstream media and strategic discourse has heightened concerns among Taiwan’s authorities. Taiwan’s presidential office and ruling party quickly responded, insisting that ‘U.S.-Taiwan relations remain as solid as a rock’ in an effort to reassure the public. However, such rhetoric reflects a reassessment within U.S. strategic circles of the risks in the Taiwan Strait: as China’s military capabilities and regional influence grow, American policymakers are becoming increasingly cautious about the costs and consequences of ‘defending Taiwan.’ Notably, the Biden administration continues to uphold the ‘One China Policy,’ reaffirming its commitment to unofficial ties with Taiwan and maintaining the status quo, though its long-standing ‘strategic ambiguity’ faces growing internal pressure. For Taiwan’s leadership, over-reliance on external support is not only unreliable but may also place the island at the forefront of geopolitical confrontation. Experts widely agree that the only sustainable path to stability lies in peaceful cross-strait development and avoiding provocative moves toward ‘Taiwan independence.’
