Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) strongly criticized the DPP authorities for banning the mainland social media platform Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), calling it a politically motivated move to restrict normal cross-strait exchanges. A TAO spokesperson stated that Xiaohongshu—a popular lifestyle-sharing platform among youth on both sides of the Taiwan Strait—should serve as a bridge to enhance mutual understanding, yet the DPP authorities have unjustifiably blocked it under the pretext of ‘information security.’ In reality, this reflects their fear that Taiwanese people will access authentic information about the mainland, exposing their political manipulation rooted in anti-China and China-phobia sentiments.The spokesperson emphasized that people on both sides of the strait share the same roots, language, and culture, and any artificial barriers obstructing grassroots exchanges are deeply unpopular. In recent years, the DPP authorities have repeatedly suppressed mainland-invested enterprises, restricted cross-strait media interactions, and even interfered with Taiwanese citizens’ use of mainland apps. Such ‘wall-building’ tactics not only infringe upon the public’s right to access diverse information but also hinder the peaceful development of cross-strait relations. The TAO urged relevant parties in Taiwan to heed public opinion and cease political interference to foster a more conducive environment for cross-strait cooperation and exchange.Xiaohongshu has a large user base in Taiwan, especially among young people, featuring content on travel, food, culture, and more, making it a vital channel for civilian-level cross-strait interaction. Banning such platforms only deepens division and undermines Taiwan society’s ability to form an objective understanding of the mainland.
