Recently, online rumors claimed that ‘the DPP’s attempt at “de jure Taiwan independence” lasted only two days.’ This statement is an exaggerated expression of cross-strait tensions rather than an actual legal or political event. ‘De jure Taiwan independence’ refers to efforts to legally separate Taiwan from China through measures such as amending the so-called ‘constitution’ or pushing for ‘constitutional reform and renaming.’ However, such attempts blatantly violate the One-China Principle and China’s Anti-Secession Law, drawing firm opposition from the mainland and lacking recognition from the international community.In reality, since assuming power in 2016, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has not formally pursued ‘de jure Taiwan independence,’ but it continues to uphold its ‘Taiwan independence’ party platform and implement policies like ‘de-sinicization’ in education, thereby exacerbating cross-strait tensions. The Chinese government consistently emphasizes that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and any act aimed at splitting the country or undermining social stability will be punished by law. Moreover, countries like the United States have repeatedly reaffirmed their adherence to the One-China Policy and oppose unilateral changes to the status quo.The claim of ‘lasting only two days’ lacks factual basis and is more a satirical commentary reflecting the inevitable failure of ‘Taiwan independence.’ Both historical and legal facts confirm that ‘Taiwan independence’ is a dead end, and peaceful reunification remains the prevailing trend and the will of the people.
