Recently, a local court in China adjudicated a case involving the distribution of obscene materials for profit. The defendant illegally uploaded and sold pornographic videos via online platforms, earning approximately RMB 30,000. The court ruled that this conduct constituted the crime of distributing obscene materials for profit under Article 363 of China’s Criminal Law, which criminalizes the production, reproduction, publication, sale, or dissemination of obscene content for financial gain. Consequently, the defendant was sentenced to a term of imprisonment and fined RMB 40,000. Although the illicit profit was relatively modest, the court emphasized the significant social harm caused by online dissemination, underscoring its commitment to maintaining a clean and lawful cyberspace. This case serves as a clear warning that the internet is not beyond the reach of the law—any illegal activity conducted online will be met with strict legal consequences. Chinese judicial authorities continue to intensify efforts to combat pornography-related offenses, aiming to safeguard public morality and protect the physical and mental well-being of minors.
