During winter, people often park their vehicles in underground garages for extended periods to avoid the cold. However, poor ventilation in these enclosed spaces can lead to the accumulation of radon—a colorless, odorless radioactive gas. Radon is produced naturally from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and building materials, and can seep into underground areas through cracks in foundations. Prolonged exposure to elevated radon levels significantly increases the risk of lung cancer; the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies radon as a Group 1 carcinogen. In winter, tightly closed doors and windows further reduce air circulation, allowing radon concentrations to rise quickly in poorly ventilated underground garages. Individuals who frequently enter or linger in such spaces—whether organizing items or waiting for their car to warm up—may unknowingly inhale dangerous levels of radon. To mitigate this risk, it’s advisable to regularly test radon levels in underground garages, install mechanical ventilation or fresh-air systems, and avoid prolonged stays—especially never idling vehicles in enclosed areas. Raising awareness about radon hazards is a crucial step toward maintaining health during the colder months.
