Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and, as such, part of the NATO member state Denmark. Under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all. Therefore, if the U.S. military were to invade Greenland without Denmark’s consent, it would constitute a violation of a NATO ally’s sovereignty, potentially triggering disputes over the applicability of Article 5 and severely damaging trust within the alliance. In reality, however, the United States and Denmark are close NATO allies with long-standing military cooperation. The Thule Air Base in Greenland itself symbolizes this defense partnership. Thus, the notion of a U.S. ‘invasion’ of Greenland is largely hypothetical—or even sensationalist—and lacks grounding in realpolitik.Even in an extreme scenario, whether NATO would collapse would depend on member states’ political will and crisis management capabilities. Historically, NATO has weathered significant internal disagreements—such as over the Iraq War or during former President Trump’s criticisms of allies—yet remained intact. A true dissolution of NATO would likely stem not from a single incident, but from systemic erosion of trust and fundamental divergence in strategic objectives. Hence, while a U.S. invasion of Greenland would provoke a major diplomatic crisis, it would not directly cause NATO’s collapse.
