Recently, many regions have announced the cancellation of standardized exams (tongkao) in compulsory education, sparking widespread public concern. Many parents are worried: without these exams, how can they assess their children’s academic performance? Will school admissions remain fair and transparent? Rather than easing with the policy change, anxiety among some families has actually intensified. In principle, standardized exams were introduced to promote educational equity and maintain consistent teaching standards. However, over time, they have been criticized for fostering excessive test-oriented education and increasing student stress. The current move to suspend these exams aligns with broader national efforts—such as the ‘Double Reduction’ policy—to reduce academic pressure and refocus education on holistic development.Yet parental anxiety is not unfounded. In a context where high-quality educational resources remain limited and competition for advancement remains fierce, standardized tests were seen as a visible symbol of fairness. Without them—and without clear, reliable alternative assessment systems—parents fear their children might fall behind in an increasingly opaque race.To genuinely alleviate this anxiety, authorities must implement trustworthy, multi-dimensional, and process-based student evaluation frameworks while ensuring more equitable distribution of educational resources. Only when education prioritizes growth over scores can parental worries truly subside.
