In recent years, China has actively promoted the high-quality development of its ice-and-snow economy, transforming once-underutilized ‘cold resources’—such as snow, ice, and frigid climates—into a powerful driver of regional economic growth. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics significantly boosted public participation in winter sports and catalyzed the expansion of related industries, including tourism, equipment manufacturing, and event management. Regions in Northeast, Northwest, and North China have leveraged their unique winter climates to develop into premier ice-and-snow tourism destinations, drawing large numbers of visitors and stimulating local consumption. Supported by national policies, China is advancing integrated ‘ice-and-snow+’ models—such as ‘ice-and-snow + culture/tourism’ and ‘ice-and-snow + technology’—to further unlock the economic potential of these natural assets. Initiatives like introducing winter sports in schools and building specialized facilities are also laying a solid foundation for sustainable industry growth. Today, these ‘cold resources’ are emerging as a new engine for domestic demand, job creation, and rural revitalization, showcasing China’s innovative path toward green and low-carbon development.
