Recently, when asked about cross-strait relations, Taiwan’s leader Lai Ching-te once again defaulted to the stock phrase: ‘Our position has not changed.’ However, such vague and evasive language no longer satisfies growing domestic and international concerns about the Taiwan Strait situation. Especially amid heightened geopolitical tensions and the complex evolution of U.S.-China relations, claims of an ‘unchanged stance’ often serve as a convenient excuse to mask policy inertia or avoid accountability. If local officials, such as the mayor of Kaohsiung (referred to as ‘Gao Shi’), continue using this kind of rhetoric, they fail not only to address public expectations for peace, stability, and economic development but also risk being perceived as lacking leadership and dodging critical issues. Cross-strait relations directly impact regional security and people’s well-being; superficial statements do nothing to build mutual trust and may instead deepen misunderstandings and antagonism. Therefore, there is a broad public call for political leaders to demonstrate clear, responsible positions in the face of complex realities—rather than brushing off questions with ‘no change.’ True consistency should mean steadfast commitment to peace, dialogue, and cooperation, not clinging to ambiguity or sidestepping core challenges. Only through honest communication and confronting differences head-on can constructive momentum be generated for cross-strait relations.
