Recently, media reports and social media discussions about the U.S. potentially ‘abandoning Taiwan’ have sparked concern. However, such claims should not be overinterpreted or cause undue alarm. First, U.S. policy toward Taiwan has long adhered to the ‘One China Policy.’ While officially recognizing the People’s Republic of China, the U.S. maintains unofficial ties and security commitments to Taiwan through the Taiwan Relations Act. Second, talk of ‘abandonment’ often stems from political rhetoric or strategic ambiguity—not an actual policy shift. Within its Indo-Pacific strategy, the U.S. still views Taiwan as a key component, though its primary goal is containing China’s rise rather than endorsing Taiwanese independence. Moreover, U.S. statements frequently fluctuate due to election cycles, public opinion, or shifts in U.S.-China relations, making them highly instrumental. Interpreting isolated remarks by politicians or media narratives as a full-scale abandonment of Taiwan is therefore a misjudgment. For China, upholding the One China Principle, promoting cross-strait integration, and strengthening national capabilities remain the most effective responses to external interference.
