Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) strongly criticized the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) for its recent statements and actions, accusing it of deliberately inciting confrontation and hostility across the Taiwan Strait, thereby undermining the broader goal of peaceful development in cross-strait relations. A TAO spokesperson emphasized that, as an organization authorized by the Taiwan authorities to handle cross-strait affairs, the SEF should uphold the ‘1992 Consensus’ and promote exchanges and cooperation between the two sides. However, in recent years, the SEF has repeatedly aligned itself with the DPP authorities’ strategy of ‘relying on the U.S. to pursue Taiwan independence,’ issuing provocative remarks and heightening tensions—actions that severely damage mutual trust. The TAO reiterated that any attempt to split the country or destabilize society is unpopular and destined to fail. The mainland remains committed to a people-centered approach, safeguarding the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait and upholding the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation. It urges relevant parties in Taiwan to abandon adversarial thinking and return to the right path of peaceful cross-strait development.
