“Pressing the philtrum” (the groove between the nose and upper lip) is a traditional first-aid method commonly used in China to treat fainting or unconsciousness. However, modern medical research shows this practice is not scientifically supported and may even pose risks.Traditionally, it’s believed that stimulating the philtrum can “revive consciousness.” In reality, fainting is usually caused by a temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain—such as vasovagal syncope or cardiac-related syncope. The most effective response is to lay the person flat on their back, elevate their legs to promote blood return to the brain, and ensure an open airway. Pressing the philtrum does nothing to improve cerebral blood flow; instead, excessive force can cause tissue injury, skin damage, or even trigger pain-induced convulsions, potentially worsening the condition. Moreover, if fainting stems from serious conditions like arrhythmia or stroke, delaying proper medical care could be life-threatening. Therefore, in cases of fainting, one should immediately call emergency services and apply evidence-based first aid—not rely on unverified folk remedies. In summary, “pressing the philtrum” lacks scientific basis and should not be promoted as a legitimate first-aid technique. Spreading accurate emergency response knowledge is essential to truly safeguard lives.
