Recently, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations delivered a firm statement at a UN meeting regarding Japan’s plan to discharge Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean. The Chinese representative urged Japan to heed the legitimate concerns of the international community, fulfill its international obligations, immediately halt the forced implementation of the discharge plan, and responsibly reconsider and correct its flawed decision. China emphasized that the disposal of Fukushima’s nuclear-contaminated water concerns the global marine environment and public health—it is not merely a domestic issue for Japan but a matter of significant importance to the shared interests of all humanity. The representative pointed out that Japan’s unilateral decision to release the contaminated water into the sea—without exhausting all safe disposal options, without sufficient consultation with neighboring countries and the international community, and without providing complete scientific data—seriously violates principles of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and undermines trust among regional nations and their peoples. China called on Japan to handle the issue in a transparent, scientific, and responsible manner, accept international oversight, and engage in sincere dialogue with all stakeholders to jointly safeguard global ecological security and human health.
