In recent years, as international competition intensifies, foreign intelligence agencies have increasingly employed covert and sophisticated methods to infiltrate personnel working in sensitive sectors such as China’s defense industry. One common tactic is the so-called ‘honey trap’—using romantic or friendly relationships to gain trust, extract classified information, or later blackmail the target after obtaining compromising material. When defense industry employees fall into such traps, the consequences can be severe: not only do they risk their personal careers, but they may also inadvertently leak critical national defense technologies and military secrets, posing a grave threat to national security. Chinese authorities have repeatedly issued warnings, urging personnel with access to classified information to heighten their awareness of confidentiality, adhere strictly to security protocols, and avoid suspicious social interactions. Defense enterprises are also strengthening internal oversight, providing psychological support, and conducting regular counter-espionage training to establish a comprehensive security framework integrating human, physical, and technical safeguards to proactively mitigate such risks.
