In July 2024, a major construction accident occurred on an under-construction railway project in Thailand, resulting in at least 29 deaths and dozens of injuries. The incident took place at an elevated bridge construction site in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in northeastern Thailand, where workers were pouring concrete when part of the structure suddenly collapsed, causing many to fall from height. Preliminary investigations suggest the collapse may have been caused by structural design flaws, inadequate supervision, and insufficient safety protocols. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the formation of a special investigative committee and suspended other projects involving the contractor responsible. The tragedy has highlighted serious safety shortcomings in Thailand’s large-scale infrastructure development and raised public concerns about construction standards in the China-Thailand Railway cooperation project—a key initiative under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Spanning approximately 873 kilometers, the railway aims to connect Bangkok with Kunming, China, enhancing regional connectivity. Following the accident, Chinese authorities expressed willingness to cooperate fully with Thai investigators and stressed that all participating contractors must strictly adhere to safety regulations. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, and compensation and psychological support are being provided to the victims’ families.
