Recently, the National Museum of China announced the successful restoration and public debut of the country’s only complete set of Tang Dynasty golden armor. Unearthed from an aristocratic tomb in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, the armor dates back over 1,300 years. It consists of hundreds of copper scales wrapped in gold foil, meticulously laced together with silk threads—a testament to the sophisticated metalworking and military craftsmanship of the Tang Dynasty’s golden age. After centuries underground, the armor was severely corroded and fragmented upon excavation. A five-year restoration effort by a multidisciplinary team employed advanced techniques such as microscopic analysis, 3D modeling, and traditional craftsmanship to painstakingly reconstruct its original splendor. This achievement not only fills a critical gap in the study of ancient Chinese armor but also offers invaluable insights into Tang military systems, ceremonial culture, and cross-cultural exchanges. Experts suggest the armor was likely ceremonial—worn for parades or by high-ranking officers as a symbol of status rather than for combat. The project marks a significant milestone, demonstrating China’s world-class capabilities in the conservation of ancient metallic artifacts.
