On June 15, 2024, Academician Zuo Tieyong, renowned Chinese materials scientist, educator, and former president of Beijing University of Technology, passed away in Beijing at the age of 94 due to illness. Born in Changsha, Hunan Province in 1930, Zuo graduated from Northeast Institute of Technology (now Northeastern University) in 1953 and dedicated his life to teaching and research in materials science and engineering. He was a pioneer in China’s research on rare-earth functional materials and made significant contributions to metallic materials, rare-earth alloys, and resource recycling. Elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1980, he served as president of Beijing University of Technology from 1993 to 2000, playing a pivotal role in advancing the university’s academic programs, scientific innovation, and internationalization, and helping it become a key institution under China’s ‘Project 211.’ Known for his rigorous scholarship and humble demeanor, Zuo earned deep respect from students and colleagues alike. His passing marks a great loss to China’s higher education and scientific communities, yet his legacy in academia and education will continue to inspire future generations.
2024年6月15日,中国著名材料科学家、教育家,北京工业大学原校长左铁镛院士因病在北京逝世,享年94岁。左铁镛先生1930年出生于湖南长沙,1953年毕业于东北工学院(现东北大学),后长期致力于材料科学与工程领域的教学与科研工作。他是中国稀土功能材料研究的奠基人之一,在金属材料、稀土合金及资源循环利用等方面取得了卓越成就。1980年当选为中国工程院院士。1993年至2000年期间,左铁镛担任北京工业大学校长,推动学校学科建设、科研创新和国际化发展,为该校跻身国家“211工程”重点建设高校作出重要贡献。他治学严谨、为人谦和,深受师生敬重。左铁镛院士的逝世是中国高等教育界和科技界的重大损失,他的学术精神与教育理念将继续激励后人。
