Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as a key next-generation battery technology due to their high energy density, enhanced safety, and longer cycle life. Unlike conventional liquid lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries replace flammable liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes, significantly reducing risks of thermal runaway and fire. Despite notable breakthroughs in laboratory settings, large-scale commercialization remains challenging. Key hurdles include insufficient ionic conductivity, interfacial instability, and high costs associated with solid electrolyte materials—such as sulfides, oxides, or polymers. Additionally, complex manufacturing processes and low yield rates drive up production costs, while high interfacial resistance between electrodes and the solid electrolyte limits overall performance. Companies like Toyota, CATL, and QuantumScape are actively advancing R&D and pilot production, with some automakers targeting vehicle launches featuring solid-state batteries between 2027 and 2030. Overall, limited commercial deployment is expected within the next 5–10 years, with full-scale mass production likely only after critical technical barriers are overcome.
