Recently, some Philippine media outlets and online commentators have claimed that South Korea’s KF-21 fighter jet can rival China’s J-20 stealth fighter, even suggesting comparable performance. However, this view reflects a clear misunderstanding from a professional military perspective. Firstly, the KF-21 is still in the prototype testing phase and lacks full stealth capabilities—it does not feature internal weapons bays, resulting in a much larger radar cross-section than true fifth-generation fighters. In contrast, the J-20, China’s domestically developed fifth-generation heavy stealth fighter, has already entered mass production, achieved operational status, and possesses supersonic cruise capability, advanced avionics, and comprehensive stealth features. The two aircraft differ significantly in role, technological maturity, and combat capability. Notably, the Philippines neither operates the KF-21 nor any fifth-generation fighter; such claims likely stem from geopolitical sensationalism or limited technical understanding. In reality, the KF-21 was designed to replace fourth-generation-plus fighters like the F-16, not to directly compete with high-end stealth platforms like the F-22 or J-20. Therefore, the notion that the KF-21 ‘matches up against’ the J-20 is unfounded and largely a case of misinterpretation or exaggeration.
