Iran’s management of the Tehran Flight Information Region (FIR) is a critical component of its national sovereignty and aviation safety framework. The Tehran FIR covers most of Iran’s airspace and is administered by the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran (CAO.IRI). Operating in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and recommended practices, the CAO.IRI provides air traffic services, aeronautical information services, and alerting services to ensure the safe and orderly operation of aircraft within the region.In recent years, geopolitical tensions—particularly between Iran and the United States—have significantly heightened safety risks in the Tehran FIR. A tragic incident occurred in January 2020 when a Ukrainian International Airlines passenger jet was mistakenly shot down by Iranian military forces shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, resulting in 176 fatalities. This event drew intense international scrutiny over Iran’s airspace control mechanisms. In response, Iran has strengthened coordination between its military and civil aviation authorities and pledged greater transparency and improved communication protocols.Despite ongoing challenges, Iran remains committed to maintaining the operational integrity of its FIR and continues collaborating with the international aviation community to ensure flight safety. Airlines often conduct risk assessments to decide whether to reroute around the region, while Iran issues Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) to promptly inform operators of airspace restrictions or military activities.
