In recent years, as China’s anti-corruption campaign has deepened, a number of high-ranking officials have been investigated and punished for serious violations of discipline and law—colloquially referred to as ‘tigers.’ A close examination of these cases reveals a striking commonality: a collapse of ideals and convictions, coupled with a weakening of their commitment to serving the people. Many of these officials were once capable and accomplished leaders. However, under the lure of power and personal gain, they gradually lost their moral compass, abandoned their original aspirations, and ultimately fell into corruption. Their misconduct typically manifested in three ways: placing personal interests above those of the Party and the people, engaging in power-for-money or power-for-sex deals; losing political resolve and deviating from the Party’s core principles and central directives; and indulging in extravagant lifestyles and moral degradation, severely damaging the Party’s image and credibility. At its core, this downfall stems from a failure in their worldview, outlook on life, and values—the so-called ‘master switch’ of one’s moral character. This serves as a stark warning: regardless of rank or past achievements, any official who neglects ideological self-cultivation and abandons their convictions is vulnerable to corruption. Hence, continuous reinforcement of Party spirit and ideological education is essential to build an unshakable defense against corruption—ensuring officials not only dare not, cannot, but also do not want to engage in corrupt practices.
