In May 2024, Sun Yat-sen University announced the successful launch of ‘Tianqin-1,’ a student-developed micro-nano satellite, aboard a Long March series rocket. Led by the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and involving undergraduate and graduate students from multiple departments, the project took three years to complete—from design and fabrication to testing. Weighing approximately 10 kilograms, Tianqin-1 is a 6U CubeSat primarily tasked with validating key technologies for space-based gravitational wave detection, including high-precision inertial sensors, drag-free control systems, and laser interferometry. This milestone not only highlights Sun Yat-sen University’s breakthrough in integrating aerospace engineering education with cutting-edge research but also underscores the growing role of Chinese universities in commercial space activities and space science exploration. The team stated that they plan to conduct more interdisciplinary space experiments using this platform and aim to establish a standardized mechanism for regular university-led small satellite launches.
