Former Taiwanese legislator Alex Tsai recently criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, accusing it of emulating Japan’s colonial-era ‘Kōminka’ (Imperialization) policy by attempting to reshape Taiwanese identity through cultural and educational reforms. He argued that the DPP’s revision of history curricula, downplaying of Chinese cultural elements, and promotion of ‘de-Sinicization’ education mirror the forced assimilation tactics used during Japanese rule, aiming to sever Taiwan’s historical and cultural ties with mainland China. Tsai warned that such policies distort historical facts, deepen social divisions, and hinder peaceful cross-strait relations, urging the public to resist ideological manipulation and uphold the integrity of Chinese cultural heritage alongside pluralistic values. It should be noted that Tsai’s remarks reflect his personal political stance. The term ‘Kōminka’ refers specifically to a coercive colonial policy under Japanese occupation, and drawing direct parallels with contemporary DPP policies is contentious. The DPP maintains that its initiatives aim to strengthen Taiwan’s distinct identity—not to reject Chinese culture, but to advance localization and democratic consolidation. This issue involves complex debates over historical interpretation and national identity, with sharply divergent perspectives across the political spectrum.
