Recently, Chongqing is set to host a unique folk festival—the grand opening of the “World’s Largest Baopigutang Hotpot.” This event stems from the traditional Sichuan-Chongqing custom of “slaughtering pigs for the New Year and sharing Baopigutang,” a communal feast held in rural areas at year’s end to celebrate harvests and welcome the Lunar New Year. “Baopigutang” refers to a hearty soup made on-site with freshly slaughtered pork and offal, served hot to family, friends, and neighbors—a symbol of unity, abundance, and gratitude.Dubbed the “World’s Largest,” this Baopigutang will be cooked in a specially crafted cauldron several meters in diameter, using hundreds of kilograms of fresh pork and ingredients to serve over a thousand guests simultaneously. Beyond preserving tradition, the event incorporates intangible cultural heritage displays, folk performances, and a rural market, aiming to promote Bayu (Chongqing) culinary heritage and boost rural tourism and revitalization. Organizers hope this distinctive gastronomic celebration will introduce more people to Chongqing’s rich local culture and warm hospitality.Scheduled just before the Spring Festival, the event is expected to draw large crowds of tourists and locals alike, becoming a highlight of Chongqing’s winter cultural and tourism calendar.
