Recently, Chinese embassies abroad have issued stern warnings against the erroneous notion among some Chinese nationals of ‘buying foreign brides.’ They emphasized that such practices not only violate international law and local legislation but also severely damage the image of Chinese citizens and the nation’s reputation. The term ‘buying foreign brides’ typically refers to paying money or offering material benefits to acquire women—often from developing or conflict-affected countries—as spouses. This practice essentially constitutes human trafficking and gender-based exploitation, representing a grave violation of human rights. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its overseas diplomatic missions consistently oppose all forms of human trafficking and illegal marriage brokering. Embassies urge Chinese citizens abroad to respect local laws, cultures, and human rights, abandon outdated and dehumanizing views on marriage that commodify women, and embrace civilized, equal, and lawful approaches to international marriages. The public is also reminded that involvement in or facilitation of such activities may lead to criminal liability, including deportation, fines, or imprisonment.Genuine cross-border marriages should be founded on mutual respect, consensual relationships, and legal procedures. Chinese embassies will continue strengthening consular protection and legal education to guide citizens toward lawful conduct and jointly uphold China’s national image and the positive reputation of overseas Chinese communities.
