The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent warning that its humanitarian food reserves in Sudan will run out by March 2024 unless new funding and supplies are secured. This alarming announcement comes as Sudan faces one of the worst humanitarian crises in its history. Since armed conflict erupted in April 2023, more than 24 million people—nearly half the population—are experiencing acute food insecurity. Of these, nearly 18 million are in ‘Crisis’ or worse levels of hunger, and millions have been forced to flee their homes.WFP states that although aid has been delivered to some affected areas, severe funding shortages, deteriorating security conditions, and logistical barriers have drastically limited the scale of assistance. If aid operations halt, the consequences could include widespread famine, worsening malnutrition, and increased mortality. The agency is urgently calling on the international community to step up financial contributions to sustain critical food distributions and ensure safe access to the most vulnerable populations. This warning not only underscores the dire urgency of Sudan’s humanitarian situation but also highlights the fragility of the global aid system amid overlapping crises. Coordinated international action is urgently needed to prevent a preventable catastrophe from spiraling further out of control.
