This trend reflects the high strategic priority countries place on achieving controlled nuclear fusion and the intense competition to lead in this cutting-edge field.In the U.S., private fusion companies such as Commonwealth Fusion Systems and TAE Technologies have attracted substantial venture capital, while the Department of Energy continues to boost public research funding. Meanwhile, China is steadily advancing its ‘artificial sun’ EAST device and the CFETR (China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor) project, demonstrating strong state-led R&D capabilities. The EU, for its part, leverages the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) program to pool multinational resources and accelerate fusion development.The academicians emphasized that although these two centers differ in technical approaches, funding models, and collaboration frameworks, both aim to hasten the commercialization of fusion energy. Going forward, global fusion research is likely to adopt a ‘dual-core’ dynamic—characterized by both competition and cooperation—to jointly usher humanity into a new era of clean energy.
