In recent years, a growing number of foreigners are flying specifically to China for medical treatment—a trend known as ‘medical tourism’ or ‘cross-border healthcare.’ China has developed notable strengths in several specialized fields, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), oncology, cosmetic surgery, assisted reproductive technology, and complex surgical procedures. For instance, TCM attracts international patients with its holistic and personalized approach, while top-tier Chinese hospitals have achieved world-class capabilities in minimally invasive surgery and organ transplantation. Moreover, compared to the high costs of healthcare in Western countries, China offers high-quality medical services at significantly more affordable prices. Take in vitro fertilization (IVF) as an example: it may cost $28,000–$42,000 in the U.S., but only $11,000–$17,000 in major Chinese cities—with comparable success rates. Additionally, many Chinese hospitals now provide multilingual services to enhance the experience for international patients. Although language barriers and cultural differences remain challenges, deeper international medical collaboration and service improvements are turning this once-niche phenomenon into a growing trend, reflecting China’s rising soft power and global influence in healthcare.
