In June 2024, the China-Laos Railway marked a historic milestone with the departure of its first dedicated freight train loaded with coffee beans from southern Laos—a major coffee-producing region—bound directly for Kunming, China. This inaugural shipment signifies a significant step in enhancing regional agricultural trade and deepening bilateral cooperation. The train carried approximately 500 metric tons of high-quality Arabica coffee beans, jointly organized by Laotian cooperatives and Chinese enterprises, and transported under cold-chain conditions to maintain freshness and quality. Since its launch in late 2021, the China-Laos Railway has dramatically reduced logistics costs and transit times, creating an efficient corridor for Laotian specialty agricultural products to access the Chinese market. This successful coffee bean shipment not only supports income growth for Laotian farmers but also offers Chinese consumers greater access to fresh, premium imported coffee. Looking ahead, both countries plan to establish regular agricultural freight services, expanding to include tea, fruits, and other commodities, further advancing green and sustainable trade cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
