In recent years, China’s banking sector has been undergoing a profound structural transformation. Official data shows that by the end of 2023, more than 9,000 bank branches nationwide had been shut down, primarily affecting rural credit cooperatives, village and township banks, and lower-tier outlets of some city commercial banks. This trend stems from a confluence of factors: rapid fintech advancement, the digital migration of customer behavior, and increasingly stringent regulatory oversight. On one hand, digital financial services—such as mobile payments, online banking, and robo-advisory platforms—have significantly improved efficiency and reduced reliance on physical branches. On the other hand, smaller banks face challenges including limited capital, declining profitability, and inadequate risk management capabilities, making it harder for them to compete. Regulators are also pushing a ‘streamlining and quality-enhancement’ agenda, encouraging institutions to optimize their networks and refocus on core businesses.Although branch closures cause short-term disruptions—such as workforce adjustments and service gaps—they represent an inevitable phase in the industry’s shift toward high-quality development. Going forward, banks will increasingly emphasize technology-driven innovation, refined operations, and differentiated services to meet the evolving demands of the digital economy.
