Recently, university canteens in multiple regions have come under public scrutiny for issues such as inflated prices, declining food quality, and chaotic outsourcing practices. Students have reported that a basic meal often costs 20–30 RMB—significantly higher than comparable options off-campus. In some cases, after being outsourced to third-party companies, canteens prioritize profit over service, cutting corners on ingredients and lowering standards, effectively turning what should be a student-serving facility into a ‘cash machine.’ As a crucial part of campus support services, university canteens are meant to provide safe, nutritious, and affordable meals—not operate as profit-driven businesses. Allowing profit motives to dominate canteen operations not only harms students’ interests but also contradicts the principles of educational equity and public service. Education authorities and universities must strengthen oversight, reaffirm the public-service nature of campus dining, regulate outsourcing procedures, implement transparent pricing mechanisms, and encourage student and faculty participation in supervision. Only then can students’ ‘right to decent food’ be truly protected, and campus canteens restored to their core mission: supporting education and ensuring student welfare.
