Recently, the Danish Ministry of Defence announced that two F-35A stealth fighter jets successfully completed a series of training exercises in Greenland. This marks the first time Denmark has deployed F-35s to the region, signifying a major enhancement of its Arctic operational capabilities. The drills included long-range flights, aerial refueling, takeoffs and landings in extreme cold conditions, and coordination with ground-based radar systems—all aimed at testing the F-35’s performance and adaptability in harsh Arctic environments. As an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland occupies a strategically vital position at the crossroads of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. With growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic, Denmark is strengthening its military presence there to safeguard sovereignty, secure maritime routes, and support NATO’s collective defense framework. The deployment of F-35s not only demonstrates the Royal Danish Air Force’s rapid response capability but also underscores Denmark’s commitment to NATO’s Arctic security posture. The F-35A is a fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter equipped with advanced sensor fusion, network-centric warfare capabilities, and high survivability—making it well-suited for reconnaissance, strike, and air defense missions in complex environments. Denmark plans to fully replace its aging F-16 fleet with F-35s by 2027, and these Greenland exercises lay the groundwork for future routine Arctic deployments.
