北方“第二城”排位生变了吗

In recent years, debate over the title of ‘second city in Northern China’ has intensified. Traditionally, Tianjin—thanks to its status as a direct-controlled municipality, port advantages, and industrial base—has long been regarded as the region’s second-largest city after Beijing. However, this ranking is now being challenged amid shifting regional economic dynamics. On one hand, Tianjin’s economic growth has slowed in recent years, with stagnant population growth and some key indicators overtaken by other cities. On the other hand, cities like Qingdao, Xi’an, and Zhengzhou are rising rapidly, driven by industrial upgrading, strategic transportation hubs, or national policy support. Notably, Xi’an—the key city in Northwest China—has leveraged the Belt and Road Initiative and technological innovation to achieve impressive growth in GDP and population attraction. As of 2023, Xi’an’s permanent resident population exceeds 13 million, and its GDP consistently ranks among China’s top 20 cities, with several metrics approaching or even surpassing those of Tianjin. Although Tianjin still holds advantages in per capita GDP, financial resources, and higher education, its overall developmental momentum appears less robust. While there is no official designation for the ‘second city,’ a multi-city race is clearly underway, signaling a significant realignment of the traditional hierarchy.

近年来,关于中国北方‘第二城’的讨论日益升温。传统上,天津凭借其直辖市地位、港口优势和工业基础,长期被视为仅次于北京的北方第二大城市。然而,随着区域经济格局的变化,这一排位正面临挑战。一方面,天津近年经济增长放缓,人口增长乏力,部分指标被其他城市超越;另一方面,青岛、西安、郑州等城市凭借产业升级、交通枢纽地位或国家政策支持,迅速崛起。尤其是西安,作为西北重镇,依托‘一带一路’倡议和科技创新,在GDP总量、人口吸引力等方面表现亮眼。2023年数据显示,西安常住人口已超1300万,GDP稳居全国前20,多项指标逼近甚至超过天津。尽管天津在人均GDP、金融资源和高等教育方面仍有优势,但综合发展活力略显不足。因此,虽然‘北方第二城’尚未有官方定论,但多城竞逐的格局已然形成,传统排位正在经历深刻调整。
