Recently, a rumor has circulated claiming that ‘there will be no Chinese New Year’s Eve (the 30th day of the 12th lunar month) this year, next year, the year after, or even the year after that,’ sparking public concern. In reality, this stems from the differences between the lunar and Gregorian calendars and the rules governing leap months in the lunar system. The traditional Chinese lunar calendar is based on the moon’s cycles, with a typical year lasting 354 or 355 days—about 11 days shorter than the solar year. To align the lunar calendar with the seasons, an extra (leap) month is added roughly every two to three years.Whether the 12th lunar month (Làyuè) includes a ’30th day’ depends on the precise timing of lunar phases. For example, in 2025, the 12th lunar month ends on the 29th, so Chinese New Year’s Eve falls on that day instead of the 30th. Similar situations may occur in 2026, 2027, and 2028, depending on astronomical calculations. However, this doesn’t mean the Spring Festival is canceled or unusual—in any case, New Year’s Eve remains the last day of the lunar year, and celebrations proceed as usual.Historically, years without a ’30th day’ in the 12th lunar month are quite common, occurring about 7 times in every 19-year cycle. Therefore, there’s no need for concern; people should simply follow the official lunar calendar for holiday planning. What truly matters is family reunion and cultural tradition, not the specific date.
