Recently, the Tianshan Wulei Tunnel in Xinjiang has been successfully completed, marking a critical milestone in the construction of the G0711 Urumqi–Yuli Expressway. Stretching approximately 22.5 kilometers, it is one of the longest highway tunnels currently under construction in China, cutting through the rugged Khora Mountains with extremely complex geological conditions and formidable engineering challenges. Once operational, the tunnel will allow vehicles to traverse the mountain in just about 13 minutes—a journey that previously required several hours of detour—significantly reducing travel time between northern and southern Xinjiang and enhancing regional transportation efficiency. Beyond its role as a major infrastructure project, the Wulei Tunnel is a vital catalyst for socioeconomic development in southern Xinjiang, fostering ethnic unity and border stability. Advanced engineering techniques were employed to overcome world-class challenges such as high geostress, rock bursts, and water inrush, showcasing China’s growing prowess in infrastructure construction. Upon full completion, the expressway is expected to cut travel time between Urumqi and Yuli from seven hours to roughly three, injecting new momentum into the development of the core region of the Belt and Road Initiative.
