In 1952, during the famed Battle of Shangganling (also known as the Battle of Triangle Hill), Zhao—then deputy political instructor of the 582nd Regiment, 194th Division, 65th Army—was ordered to defend Hill 67. Facing overwhelming enemy artillery and forces far outnumbering his own, he led his comrades in fierce resistance, repelling multiple assaults. When ammunition and supplies ran out and the position was on the verge of collapse, Zhao made the ultimate decision: he radioed headquarters to request artillery fire directly onto his own position, choosing to perish with the enemy rather than surrender. His heroic act fulfilled the vow, ‘As long as I live, the position holds.’ His sacrifice greatly inspired the morale of the entire army. Posthumously awarded the Special Merit honor, he was hailed as a ‘Communist fighter of extraordinary bravery and unyielding loyalty.’ Today, reflecting on Zhao Xianyou’s spirit is not only an act of remembrance but also a call to uphold values of loyalty, responsibility, and self-sacrifice—qualities that continue to inspire us in times of peace to remain steadfast in our convictions and strive tirelessly for the nation and its people.
