Recently, Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Cheng Li-wen responded to public inquiries regarding when the Cross-Strait Forum between the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) might be held. She stated that as an important platform for dialogue between the two parties, the timing of the forum must take into account the current state of cross-strait relations, the political climate, and mutual consensus. Cheng emphasized that the KMT consistently adheres to the ‘1992 Consensus’ and opposes Taiwan independence, aiming to promote peaceful and stable development across the Taiwan Strait. She noted that if conditions are ripe and the atmosphere conducive, the forum could potentially resume—but only if it genuinely benefits mutual trust and the well-being of people on both sides. Cheng also urged the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration to face cross-strait realities and avoid using political manipulation to obstruct normal exchanges.It is worth noting that the KMT-CCP Forum has not been held since 2016 due to heightened tensions in cross-strait relations. Cheng’s remarks are seen as a positive signal from the KMT regarding the possible revival of this dialogue mechanism, while also underscoring that any resumption would require a solid foundation of mutual trust.
