Recently, the global chip price surge has continued to intensify and is now spreading to so-called ‘legacy products’—chips manufactured using mature process nodes (typically 28nm and above). These chips are widely used in home appliances, industrial control systems, automotive electronics, and consumer electronics. Historically stable in pricing due to mature technology and ample supply, they are now facing dual pressures of supply shortages and rising costs.Three main factors drive this trend: First, geopolitical tensions have restricted exports of critical raw materials and equipment. Second, surging demand from downstream sectors like electric vehicles and smart home appliances has crowded out capacity for legacy chips. Third, foundries are prioritizing high-margin advanced-node production, indirectly limiting investment in mature-node capacity expansion. Additionally, rising energy costs and inflation have further increased manufacturing expenses.Industry experts warn that this price rally could persist for several quarters. Companies are advised to proactively adjust supply chain strategies—such as building inventory buffers, seeking alternative components, or forging long-term supplier partnerships. Consumers may soon see higher prices for certain household appliances and auto parts. In the long run, boosting localized production capacity and optimizing chip allocation mechanisms will be crucial to rebalancing supply and demand.
