From Trump’s skepticism toward NATO and trade pressures on Europe to Biden’s attempts to mend ties while still facing persistent strategic disagreements, coordination between the U.S. and Europe has weakened across security, economics, technology, and even shared values.Initially, the Ukraine war briefly revitalized transatlantic unity. However, as the conflict drags on, Europe is increasingly pursuing ‘strategic autonomy’ in energy, defense, and China policy, resisting blind alignment with Washington. Meanwhile, America’s strategic pivot to the Indo-Pacific and its ‘de-risking’ approach toward China have left Europe concerned about being sidelined. Compounding these tensions, rising populism within both regions further erodes mutual political trust.Still, talk of an outright ‘divorce’ remains exaggerated. Deep-rooted ties in democratic institutions, market economies, and shared security interests ensure that a complete split is unlikely in the near term. A more accurate description is that U.S.-Europe relations are entering a phase of ‘renegotiation’—characterized by coexistence of cooperation and competition, closeness without unconditional loyalty. Thus, while the countdown to divorce hasn’t begun, couples counseling is definitely on the agenda.
