Recently, China’s ‘Trillion-Yuan Foreign Trade Club’ has expanded. This term refers to provinces or municipalities whose annual import and export volume exceeds RMB 1 trillion. Following traditional foreign trade powerhouses such as Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Beijing, Shandong and Fujian have now also joined this elite group, signaling a significant shift in China’s foreign trade landscape. This expansion is driven by sustained national policies supporting foreign trade, alongside regional industrial upgrades, the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce, and new opportunities created by regional trade agreements like the RCEP. For instance, Shandong has leveraged its port advantages and advanced manufacturing to continuously optimize its export structure, while Fujian has achieved rapid trade growth through strong economic ties with ASEAN and Belt and Road Initiative partner countries. The growing membership of this ‘trillion-yuan club’ not only reflects the resilience of China’s foreign trade and the success of regional coordinated development but also boosts global confidence in supply chain stability. As China continues to deepen high-level opening-up, more provinces—particularly in central and western regions—are expected to join, propelling China’s foreign trade toward higher-quality and more sustainable growth.
