Recently, two U.S. Navy warships transited the Taiwan Strait again, drawing strong attention from China. The U.S. typically describes such operations as ‘routine freedom of navigation activities,’ aimed at demonstrating its military presence in the Indo-Pacific and upholding what it calls ‘international law and freedom of navigation.’ However, these actions are in effect provocations against China’s sovereignty and security interests. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and the Taiwan Strait comprises a mix of China’s internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, and exclusive economic zone—areas over which China holds full sovereign rights and jurisdiction. Frequent U.S. naval and aerial transits through the strait not only heighten regional tensions but also send misleading signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces. China firmly opposes such moves and has lodged solemn representations with the U.S. through diplomatic and military channels. The Chinese military remains on high alert to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The U.S. should cease actions that undermine regional peace and stability and address Taiwan-related issues in a constructive manner to avoid further damage to China-U.S. relations.
