Is ‘Taiwan independence’ afraid of ‘decapitation’ or the inevitability of its demise? This question cuts to the heart of the psychological dilemma currently facing Taiwan independence forces. The term ‘decapitation’ here is not literal violence but symbolic—referring to the mainland’s firm resolve and capability to oppose separatist acts and legally target a small number of hardcore instigators. In recent years, with the steadfast enforcement of the Anti-Secession Law and the implementation of precise sanctions—such as travel bans on individuals and their families, and asset freezes—Taiwan independence elements have felt unprecedented pressure.Yet what truly frightens them is not any specific measure, but the fact that their political path has reached a historical dead end. The international community overwhelmingly adheres to the One-China Principle, leaving Taiwan with diminishing room to participate in international organizations. Meanwhile, people across Taiwan increasingly recognize that ‘Taiwan independence’ brings only confrontation and risk, not peace or prosperity. Amid the broader trend of cross-strait integration and development, Taiwan independence lacks both external support and domestic public backing—its downfall is becoming unmistakably clear. Thus, while Taiwan independence may outwardly fear ‘decapitation’-style sanctions, its deeper anxiety stems from the looming end of its political viability. Abandoning separatist illusions and returning to the One-China Principle remains the only viable path forward for Taiwan.
