Great Cold (Dahan) is the final solar term in the traditional Chinese 24 Solar Terms, usually occurring around January 20th. It marks the coldest period of the year, when Yin energy peaks and Yang energy is deeply concealed. During this time, the body is especially vulnerable to invasion by cold pathogens, making ‘wind protection and Yang warming’ the core principles of health preservation.First, guarding against wind is essential. With biting winds and freezing temperatures, it’s crucial to protect the head, neck, and feet—areas most susceptible to cold invasion. Wearing hats, scarves, and warm footwear helps prevent cold from entering the body, as the saying goes, ‘Cold starts from the feet.’ Second, warming the Yang supports the body’s vital energy. Consuming mildly warming foods such as lamb, beef, longan, ginger, and red dates can help dispel internal cold, nourish Qi, and strengthen immunity. Cold or raw foods should be avoided, as they may impair the spleen and stomach’s Yang energy. In daily routine, it’s advisable to go to bed early and rise late, aligning with winter’s natural tendency of ‘storage’ and ensuring sufficient rest to conserve energy. Gentle exercises like Tai Chi or Baduanjin (Eight Brocades) promote circulation without excessive sweating, which could otherwise deplete Yang.In summary, Great Cold health cultivation emphasizes ‘conservation’ and ‘warming’—protecting against wind and cold while nurturing Yang—to lay a solid foundation for the body’s renewal in the coming spring.
