Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) issued a stern response regarding malicious persecution of mainland spouses (known as ‘Lupei’) by certain ‘Taiwan independence’ forces in Taiwan, clearly stating that accomplices involved will be severely punished in accordance with the law. The TAO emphasized that some ‘Taiwan independence’ elements have used political manipulation to discriminate against, harass, and even expel mainland spouses residing in Taiwan, seriously violating their fundamental human rights and legitimate interests, and undermining cross-strait civilian exchanges and family harmony. Such actions not only contravene humanitarian principles but also cross the red line of national sovereignty and ethnic dignity.The TAO stressed that the mainland has always resolutely safeguarded the legitimate rights of all compatriots, including mainland spouses. Any attempt to incite cross-strait confrontation or promote ‘Taiwan independence’ separatism by targeting mainland spouses will face severe legal and historical consequences. The office also urged the general public in Taiwan to discern right from wrong and jointly resist extremist ‘Taiwan independence’ rhetoric and actions to uphold the broader goal of peaceful cross-strait relations. This stance reaffirms the mainland’s unwavering commitment to the one-China principle and opposition to any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities, while demonstrating deep concern for the well-being of cross-strait families.
