Recently, China and Japan have reached a new agreement on their cooperative giant panda research program. The last two giant pandas residing in Japan—’Bili’ and ‘Xianü’ (known in Japan as Riri and Shinshin)—originally scheduled to return to China in 2026, will now come back by the end of 2024. This decision marks the approaching end of over five decades of giant panda residency in Japan, which began when Ueno Zoo first received pandas in 1972.Since arriving at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo in 2011, Bili and Xianü have become beloved icons among the Japanese public and important symbols of Sino-Japanese people-to-people friendship. Their early return is primarily driven by comprehensive considerations related to giant panda conservation and breeding strategies. The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda stated that, as international cooperation models evolve, China is optimizing the management and repatriation schedule of pandas overseas to better support conservation efforts for this endangered species.Although their departure has saddened many Japanese visitors, Ueno Zoo expressed understanding and support for the decision. The zoo plans to hold commemorative events to raise public awareness about wildlife conservation. Both countries remain committed to ongoing collaboration in wildlife protection and scientific research, continuing their friendly partnership in ecological conservation.
