Can ‘scrap metal’ really become ‘hard currency’? In the context of a circular economy and growing resource scarcity, the answer is increasingly yes. The term ‘scrap metal’ typically refers to discarded metallic materials—such as copper, iron, and aluminum—from old appliances, end-of-life vehicles, and construction waste. Once considered mere trash, these materials are now gaining significant value due to metal shortages and their recyclability.Take copper, for example: prized for its excellent conductivity, it’s essential in power transmission, electronics, and renewable energy systems. With limited global copper reserves and high environmental costs of mining, recycled copper has become a crucial alternative. According to the Bureau of International Recycling, about 40% of global copper consumption already comes from recycled sources. Similarly, steel recycling not only conserves iron ore but also drastically reduces energy use and carbon emissions. In China, driven by the ‘dual carbon’ goals (carbon peak and carbon neutrality), the scrap metal recycling infrastructure is rapidly improving, with policies incentivizing businesses to engage in resource recovery. Some large-scale recyclers now use advanced refining technologies to transform scrap into high-purity metals suitable for high-end manufacturing—effectively turning waste into valuable raw material.Of course, not all scrap automatically becomes ‘hard currency’; its worth depends on type, purity, market demand, and recycling capabilities. Nevertheless, within the rising tide of the green economy, ‘scrap metal’ is steadily evolving from waste into a strategic urban resource—earning its nickname as the ‘urban mine.’
