The United Nations has recently issued a stark warning that the world is entering an era of ‘water bankruptcy.’ This term refers to a situation where humanity’s consumption of freshwater far exceeds its natural replenishment rate, leading to severe depletion. According to the UN’s 2024 World Water Development Report, approximately 2 billion people currently live in areas of high water stress, and by 2030, global freshwater demand is projected to surpass sustainable supply by 40%. Key drivers of this crisis include population growth, industrialization, excessive agricultural water use, and climate change–induced extreme droughts and altered precipitation patterns. Experts stress that without immediate, systemic actions—such as improving water-use efficiency, strengthening water governance, investing in water-saving technologies, and protecting ecosystems—water scarcity will intensify risks related to food security, public health, and geopolitical tensions. The UN urges governments, businesses, and citizens to collectively treat water as a strategic public asset and implement equitable, sustainable water policies to prevent ‘water bankruptcy’ from escalating into a global catastrophe.
