Recently, large-scale internet outages have reoccurred in parts of Iran, drawing significant international attention. According to multiple internet monitoring organizations, since the beginning of this month, the Iranian government has imposed strict restrictions on internet access, including cutting off mobile data, blocking social media platforms, and drastically reducing bandwidth. This internet shutdown is widely seen as a response to domestic protests, aimed at controlling information flow and preventing the spread of demonstrations. Although Iranian authorities have not officially clarified the reasons for the blackout, historical precedent shows that such measures are frequently employed during politically sensitive periods to maintain social order. The disruption severely impacts daily life and business operations, while also obstructing external access to accurate information about the situation on the ground. Human rights groups have condemned the move as a violation of citizens’ rights to free expression and access to information. As of now, the internet blackout continues, with only limited fixed-line connectivity available in some cities for basic communication. The international community is urging Iran to restore full internet access and uphold fundamental digital rights.
