Recently, the ‘Beast Mode’ configuration of China’s J-35 stealth fighter has drawn significant attention. ‘Beast Mode’ refers to a loadout that sacrifices some stealth capabilities in exchange for dramatically increased firepower by carrying a large number of weapons externally. This mode is not intended for high-threat penetration missions but rather for scenarios where air superiority is already established and intensive strike capabilities against ground or maritime targets are required.In this updated configuration, the J-35 can carry up to 12 precision-guided munitions in Beast Mode, including PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles, PL-10 short-range dogfight missiles, and various air-to-surface or anti-ship cruise missiles and smart bombs. Multiple underwing and fuselage hardpoints are fully utilized, enabling a total external payload exceeding 8 metric tons—significantly enhancing its multirole combat effectiveness. Additionally, the aircraft’s avionics suite has been optimized to support more efficient weapon management and target allocation, ensuring stable flight control and mission execution even under heavy load.Importantly, Beast Mode doesn’t mean abandoning stealth design altogether; instead, it offers flexible mission configurations tailored to different operational needs. This ‘high-low mix’ approach allows the J-35 to perform both deep-penetration stealth missions and, when necessary, transform into a heavily armed ‘flying arsenal,’ greatly improving tactical flexibility and battlefield adaptability. With further upgrades to its weapon systems and electronic warfare capabilities, the J-35’s overall combat effectiveness is expected to reach new heights.
