In recent years, as the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force accelerates its modernization, advanced fighters such as the J-20, J-16, and J-10C have entered mass service, significantly enhancing China’s combat capabilities, information integration, and joint operational effectiveness. In contrast, Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) still relies primarily on aging F-15Js and F-2s, despite ongoing procurement of F-35A/B fighters. The pace of fleet renewal remains slow, and Japan lacks an indigenous fifth-generation fighter. In contested airspace such as over the East China Sea, frequent aerial encounters between Chinese and Japanese aircraft highlight the PLA’s growing advantage in numbers, training frequency, and integrated command systems, allowing it to maintain greater tactical initiative and sustained presence. Moreover, China’s rapid advancements in unmanned systems, airborne early warning platforms, and electronic warfare capabilities further widen the gap in overall air combat architecture. Although Japan is deepening military cooperation with the U.S. and developing its next-generation F-X fighter, its current air force faces challenges in matching the PLA’s high-tempo, multi-directional aerial operations in the short term. Consequently, some analysts argue that Japan’s fighter fleet is increasingly struggling to keep pace with the PLA’s rapidly evolving operational tempo and systemic support.
